"The Reelsmithing Workshop" at Arts of the Angler show

I will be giving a realsmithing workshop at The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum's Art of the Angler Show in Danbury, Ct. on November 15th and 16th. Here is the description for the event:

Attendees of The Reelsmithing Workshop will be tutored in building their first fly reel by instructor Michael Hackney. The classroom session begins with an overview of the materials and tools used in construction, followed by demonstrations of Michael’s proven reelsmithing techniques and reel design. The hands-on workshop consists of 8 hours of instruction (over 2 days) in a small group setting; the class is limited to 6 students.

Beginning reelsmiths will receive a complete kit of materials and the expendable supplies required to build a beautiful and functional 3" brass fly reel suitable for 3 to 5 weight lines. Using their own tools, students will learn how to saw and shape brass, drill and tap holes, form perfectly round reel frame and spool components with an electric drill, shape and smooth brass with files, and polish brass to a mirror finish. Reel construction will be broken down in to four sub-assemblies, including the reel frame, spool and drag, handle, and reel foot and bracket. These assemblies will be polished and fitted to complete the project reel.

More information, the complete tool list (and sources to purchase them), and photos will be posted soon. Pre-paid attendees will be given access to a private discussion area where they can “meet” before the workshop, obtain more detailed information, and ask the instructor and each other questions. Cost for this 2 day, hands-on workshop is $275 for CFFCM members and $300 for non-members. Attendees will be provided with all required materials, drawings and templates, and instruction to complete their reel during the workshop. In the event that additional time or instruction is required, Michael will provide assistance through the private forum for worksop attendees. It is Michael's goal for everyone to complete a brass reel they can be proud to show and fish!"

More details and registration information will be published when it is available. Please note that the link above is not yet active!

This will be a fun and educational event for prospective reelsmiths! I will be using this forum to collaborate with the class before and after the workshop.

Regards,
Michael

Thanks Richard. I know, I actually say that in my post "Please note that the link above is not yet active!"

I need to get the final information from the organizer and then I will activate that link. Meanwhile, I think I will just remove it for now.

thanks,
Michael

The November workshop is postponed. The event coordinator told me that the hotel was charging an arm & leg for rooms for the workshops. So, I will still be offering the 1 hour seminar. The plan is to offer the reelsmithing workshop at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in the spring. If you've never been there, it is a great venue!

Meanwhile, anyone in Ct, MA, ME, NH and VT - I could offer more local weekend (1 day probably) classes to TU groups, fly shops, etc. Let me know if you have any ideas.

cheers,
Michael
