"The Reelsmith's Primer" Challenge!

Postby eclecticguy » Wed Aug 19, 2009 2:57 pm

Here is the list of reelsmiths who have successfully completed The Reelsmith's Primer Challenge! These folks made their first reels using the draft version of The Reelsmith's Primer, and did so in style. They will all be getting a copy of the book as soon as it comes back from the printer in March.

1) fishketcha - Wayne has the honor of being the first new reelsmith! He persevered through "the early days" when there was no book, only emails and drawings. Great job Wayne! I love the bluing treatment on your reel.

2) RJD - Ron's reel is nicely made and features an aluminum (rather than Delrin) spool hub and a raised pillar reel foot mount. Two interesting and attractive tweaks on the basic design! The burl maple grip is a nice detail. Way to go Ron!

3) jturick - John's first reel with some absolutely beautiful photography! The reel is displayed on one of John's lovely wood strip rods with a rattan grip. Super job on the rod, reel and photography John!

4) Amabilis - Randy's reel turned out fantastic! Some neat innovations too - handle counterbalance, bamboo handle, unpolished screw heads for contrast, and a raised pillar foot mount similar to Ron's. Great polishing job too.

5) Amston - Richard's first reel is a keeper! Especially tucked inside that beautiful leather case he made. Really nice job on the flamed bamboo grip too.

6) rosborne - Roger's first reel turned out great! The reel has an elliptical foot and interesting grip shape! Great job Roger.

Cheers,
Michael

Hi
Excuse me if I am not taking part in the forum in the correct way - I'm a forum virgin. I live in UK so the materials would be expensive / difficult to get over here. I did read there is a drawing for the reel. Could you send that to me and I can start from there?
hope you can help.

Cheers

Neil

Now CLOSED: "The Reelsmith's Primer" Challenge!

Postby eclecticguy » Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:28 am

The challenge is now closed to new entries (there are a few people I gave extensions to that are just finishing up their reels). I want to thank everyone who participated! Your reels turned out great and everyone made their own little tweaks and customizations! Well Done!

The book is about to go to print and I'll update the challenge winners when their book is shipped. I may have another challenge later this year on something new (reel that is).

cheers,
Michael
